Patents reveal Ferrari’s plan for new turbocharged engines

Ferrari turbocharged V8 engine patent drawing - Click above to enlarge

Last week, we learned that Ferrari was taking a long, hard look at hybrid drivetrains as a way to improve the performance of its line of supercars when a less-than-ideal amount of traction is present. While Ferrari’s patent documents didn’t mention environmental concerns as a reason to investigate hybrids, it seems likely that the issue is at least on the minds of Italian automaker’s engineers. But it isn’t the only technology Ferrari is developing in an effort to build more efficient vehicles that don’t sacrifice performance.

A search of Europe’s patent database system shows that Ferrari has recently submitted proposals for a new twin-turbo design for V-shaped engines with six, eight, ten or twelve cylinders. Of course, twin-turbo engines have been done hundreds of times before (including by Ferrari back in 1980s and early ’90s), so its the arrangement of the two turbochargers along with all the associated plumbing required to make it all work that the Italian automaker is seeking to patent.

The drawing submitted with the application shows an eight-cylinder engine with two equally-sized turbochargers nestled inside the V of the engine block and cylinder heads. The system would use one turbocharger at low engine speeds and would only use the second turbocharger for maximum power and torque when required. Click here to view the actual patent application.

REPORT: GM preparing to give more dealerships the axe

May 31

On top of the 1,124 General Motors dealers that will be closed next year, the ailing automaker is reportedly going to announce another round of dealer closings on Monday when its bankruptcy declaration is expected. According to two Automotive News sources, 450 dealers will not see their dealer franchises renewed. For his part, Mark LaNeve, GM’s VP of North American sales, said the number would be “less than half that.”

No matter the number, it’s more of the same bad-yet-necessary news being spread around. LaNeve notes that the dealers who won’t be renewed “have very specific issues” including “specific performance issues.” Among them are supposed to be some stores that are skewed exclusively or heavily Pontiac. These dealers will be shutting up shop when their franchise agreements expire in October 2010.

Telesto Ventures’ bid for GM’s Saturn division thick with Chrysler talent

May 31

The General Motors appendage known as Saturn is scheduled to be scalpeled off sooner rather than later. What happens to the mass once it has been removed from its host is still uncertain, though there are apparently groups interested in the shiny metal entrails. GM has reportedly whittled the roster of buyers it might let Saturn go to down to two or three, says a source at The Detroit News. One of the few that hasn’t been culled is Telesto Ventures, which has put its auto team together.

Heavy with ex-Chrysler people, Telesto’s group counts former design head Tom Gale (right) among its numbers. The ex-Auburn-Hillers bring big experience to Telesto’s attempt to snag Saturn from among the small pool of bidders, and the group believes that Saturn under the leadership of Telesto’s team can have a significant effect on the auto industry. It’s not yet clear who’s got the most attractive bid for Chrysler, and Telesto’s got to compete with the likes of Roger Penske and Magna - the latter of which apparently already has the inside track on Opel.

Citroen DS Inside insides revealed

May 31

Citroen DS Inside interior - Click above for a high-res image gallery

At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Citroen pushed its DS3 concept into a darkened corner with horrible lighting, making the actual vehicle extremely difficult to see and photograph. Apparently, the quirky French automaker wasn’t quite ready to have the motoring public take a good look at its DS revival. That changes today as Citroen has released a bevy of images along with a video of its latest DS Inside concept vehicle, which is likely a thinly veiled demonstration of what’s in store for the upcoming DS3 production model.

We can clearly see that Citroen is planning to make the DS3 a premium small car. Leather surfaces with unique textures and graining are the theme inside, and we think it’s all highly purposeful and attractive. Unlike recent modern takes on classic vintage designs from Volkswagen, Mini and Fiat, the revived DS shares absolutely nothing in common with its forebear and namesake. Couldn’t we at least get a cool single-spoke steering wheel to gaze at? See for yourself in our gallery below and in the video posted after the break.

Warren, MI mayor offers GM deal to move headquarters, Detroit officials counter

May 31

Earlier this month, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson said in reference to the possibility that the automaker may move its headquarters from Detroit: “We’re looking at, frankly, everything within our business, but it’s not like we have that queued up at the top of our list. We don’t have any such plan… but if we did it would be motivated by business rationale, which would be cost, efficiency and speed.”

Apparently, Jim Fouts, mayor of the city of Warren, Michigan, was paying attention. In an effort to lure General Motors from its current Renaissance Center headquarters in the heart of Detroit. The Detroit News reports that Fouts has hand-delivered a letter to the automaker’s top brass outlining what he describes as “an offer they will find hard to refuse.” Fouts goes on, “I’ve done everything I can humanly and legally do to induce General Motors to make this wise, economical move.” That offer reportedly includes the largest set of tax breaks ever offered in the state of Michigan.

Not surprisingly, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, Governor Jennifer Granholm and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano are less than enthused about the idea of GM moving to Warren. Ficano says, “We got together and asked what tools we have in our toolbox to tell the rest of the world that we’re really open for business.” Apparently, that toolbox holds its own set of tax incentives and abatements designed to keep GM in the RenCen.

All things being equal, it seems unlikely that General Motors would vacate its current headquarters to move to Warren, especially with an expected bankruptcy filing waiting in the wings. Either way, the ball is now firmly in GM’s court.

BMW introduces exclusive M3 Edition models

May 31

2009 BMW M3 Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s difficult to make the new BMW M3 even more appealing, but that’s exactly what the boys from Bavaria are trying to do with the new M3 Edition models. The limited run of 2009 M3s feature a choice of four bespoke paint schemes - Alpine White Non-Metallic, Black Non-Metallic, Dakar Yellow Non-Metallic or Monte Carlo Blue Metallic - along with a black-finished twin kidney grille, fender vents and mirror caps. Body-colored side-mirror bases and darkened chrome quad exhaust tips round out the exterior mods, and things get even more individual inside.

The interior benefits from a center console and armrests finished in white on the Alpine and black models, with “Carbon Structure Leather” trim and black Novillo leather seats, each complimented with white stitching. Vertical white trim adorns the back-rest and leg-rest, while the yellow and blue models get matching interior trimmings, and all Edition models feature both a numbered plaque and checkered flag door sills.

The only “performance” modifications are a suspension dropped by 10mm (0.4-inches) and Edition-specific forged, 19-inch double-spoke wheels, available in either black, brushed metal or - on the white, black and blue models - polished spokes with contrasting white highlights. Sales will begin this July and will only be available for a six month term. Make the jump for all the details.

Audi reportedly shoots down electric R8 rumor for Frankfurt

May 31

Rumors in the European press that Audi would bring an all-electric R8 supercar (or an extended range EV that uses a diesel range extender) to the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September have been denied by an Audi spokesperson. The anonymous Audi representative told Edmund’s Inside Line that the stories in Auto Motor und Sport in Germany and L’Automobile in France were “not true.”

Instead, Audi will stick to the liquid fuel path and show off the R8 Spyder with gas engines. While we certainly don’t fault Audi for sticking with what it knows, the possibility of a limited edition R8 EV challenging Tesla made for a good night’s dream, anyway.

REPORT: California still wants EPA waiver to set emissions standards until 2012

May 31

Even though President Obama’s new national CAFE standards will lean on the stricter California standards for support and there was broad agreement that a national standard of this type is the way to move forward, the devilish details could still cause a disagreement or two.

Problem One is that the new CAFE rules don’t start affecting new cars until the 2012 model year. Problem Two is that the whole EPA waiver thing hasn’t been decided. While California will back down once the 2012 models are here, that state has announced that it still wants to be able to regulate tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions between now and then. The New York Times‘ Jim Motavalli explains that California doesn’t see its rules for the next few years being all that tough for automakers to comply with using existing technology. The battle lines are still drawn, but they’re getting a bit scuffed up.
